My dear brothers and sisters of AFUMC, As a Latina and immigrant with a strong and convicted call to serve my Lord and his children with all my heart, I feel the call to serve my brothers and sisters from the Latino community. Therefore, with the permission of the Lead Pastors of our church, I started a pilot project Latino Saturday Worship at the Christian Life Center on December 19th. This is in keeping with the Great Commission which Jesus gave us in Matthew 28:19-20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Starting with 17 people, we have had up to 30 in attendance at this service. As you know, the Latino/Hispanic population throughout the United States is growing at an unprecedented rate, but our United Methodist denomination has generally fallen short in serving this community. However, we now have the opportunity for our church in Ankeny to serve them. I realize that this will require both a tremendous amount of prayer and effort, as we need to invite them personally. Visits may be made to homes, hospitals, schools and rehabilitation centers. Nevertheless, I am a person with high energy and a strong desire to serve, and I invite you to join with me. Please know that I cannot do this alone; your support, help and acceptance will be essential in fulfilling this goal. Here's how you can help: Spread the word to your Latino or Spanish-speaking friends, coworkers, or neighbors, to come and worship with us every Saturday at 5:30pm at the Christian Life Center. Feel free to notify me if there is a Latino family I can visit to personally invite them. If you speak Spanish, and would like to share the love of Christ with others, please join us in leading this effort. But even if you do not speak Spanish, everyone is welcome. The love and grace of God can be felt regardless of language. Please pray for this effort and contact the church office or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
