Social Issues / Legislative Alert Ministry

The United Methodist Church has a long history of social advocacy. Our church speaks its heart and mind based on our mutual understanding of what it means to be a disciple, based on guidance from these resources:

  • General Conference Book of Discipline
  • General Conference Book of Resolutions
  • United Methodist Social Principles
  • Iowa Conference Book of Resolutions

The Social Issues Ministry seeks to inform members of Ankeny First United Methodist Church of development on issues pertaining to social advocacy, including the following:

  • Position of the United Methodist Church on priority social issues such as immigration, healthcare, economic justice, environment, criminal justice and equality/human rights.
  • Activities of the Iowa Legislature, regarding these issues, and other of interest to the United Methodist Church.
  • Opportunities to exercise civic responsibilities, such as voter registration and election/caucus details.
  • Decisions made and actions taken at Iowa Annual Conferences, and United Methodist Church General Conferences.

Volunteers have organized and presented the following informational seminars:

  • The Church and Politics
  • Iowa Caucus Processes and Procedures
  • Presentations by the Leadership Development Minister for Social Justice and Mission for the Iowa United Methodist Church
